Canter for Climate - Case Studies

Canter for Climate has produced this series of Case Studies, providing real life examples of individuals managing horses and land for better animal and environmental outcomes.  Land management methods explored within these Case Studies include regenerative agriculture, strip grazing, and rotational grazing methods among others.

We hope that you enjoy reading these Case Studies and learning practical tips and tricks which may help you better manage your horses’ and land.

Gavin Heywood

Case Study #1

Gavin Heywood and his family run 200 to 250 horses on 1900 acres of their 2400 ha property near Manilla, NSW.

For the last 12 years they have used a Regenerative (time-controlled) grazing system where the herd is moved around the property confined to relatively small paddocks with the horses at high density for short periods. The paddock is then given long periods of recovery time.

Everything they do is aimed ultimately at reducing their carbon footprint.

Diana O'Donnell

Case Study #2

Diana O’Donnell ran three pleasure and competition horses on her 5 acre property at Black River, just north of Townsville in Far North Queensland. For the last three years there she used strip grazing practices that had a significant impact on improving the quantity and quality of pasture produced.
